Original used Bosch auxiliary air slide valve for selected BMW E23, E24 and E28 models equipped with an M30 petrol engine.

The valve supplies additional bypass air while the engine is cold, increasing the cold-idle speed. As the valve warms up, its internal shutter gradually closes and reduces the additional airflow.

This original Bosch component carries reference number 0 280 140 133. The corresponding BMW catalogue number is 13631274606.

Several visually similar Bosch auxiliary air valves were fitted to classic BMW models. Compatibility must therefore be determined using the Bosch and BMW part numbers rather than appearance alone.

Do not confuse this valve with Bosch versions such as 0 280 140 124, 0 280 140 134, 0 280 140 152 or other visually similar auxiliary air valves. These versions may have different internal calibration or vehicle applications.

Function

When the engine is cold, the valve permits additional air to bypass the closed throttle valve. This increases the cold-idle speed and helps the engine run smoothly during its warm-up period.

The electrical heating element and rising engine temperature gradually close the internal shutter. Once the engine is warm, the additional airflow should be substantially reduced.

A defective or sticking valve may contribute to:

• Incorrect cold-idle speed
• Engine stalling shortly after a cold start
• Excessively high warm idle
• Fluctuating or unstable idle speed
• Air-leak or lean-running symptoms

These symptoms may also have other causes and do not constitute a diagnosis.

Condition

Testing recommendation

Before installation:

• Inspect both air connections for damage or deformation
• Check the electrical connector and terminals
• Inspect the mounting bracket
• Look through the air passage while the valve is cold
• Confirm that the internal shutter is at least partially open when cold
• Check the electrical heating element for continuity
• Apply the correct electrical supply and verify that the passage gradually closes
• Clean the internal air passage using a suitable non-aggressive cleaner
• Allow the valve to dry completely before installation
• Check the complete auxiliary-air system for vacuum leaks

Do not force the internal shutter with a screwdriver or other hard object, as this may damage the mechanism or alter its calibration.
